Uplight Values in Action: Upholding the Highest Standards with SOC1 Compliance

Team working together

Uplight’s core values shape who we are as a company and how we interact with each other, our customers, and our partners. Our core values are: Do the Right Thing, Impactful Progress, Grow, and One Team.

Each month we highlight a story about how an Uplight team member(s) has shown us what it means to live one of our values. It’s also a great way to learn more about how we work together at Uplight. Today, we highlight a behind the scenes team, who ensures that Uplight holds the highest standards related to security, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy.

Who were the Team Members involved and what do they work on?

George Holland & Gail Hall from Risk and Compliance were involved as well as Andrew Phillips, Mike Konrath, and Jen Kinney from Step Change Labs.

What was the project or the problem you were trying to solve?

We are ensuring that the new Plus Program is being designed in compliance with SOC1 audit requirements by implementing financial controls to ensure accurate and complete customer payment transactions.

In this project, the team demonstrated the following Uplight Company values.

  • Do the right thing: We act with integrity, even when it’s hard.
  • Impactful progress: We work to meaningful outcomes, mindful of each step it takes to achieve them.

How did they do so?

Uplight’s Step Change Labs team communicated with the Risk & Compliance team during the project design and implementation process. By taking the extra steps on the front end they have effectively collaborated with the Risk & Compliance team to efficiently implement SOC1 controls. The Risk & Compliance team has made impactful progress by ensuring the Plus program is ready for the independent 2021 SOC1 audit testing and subsequent audit report provided to our utility clients.

The SOC1 controls not only improves process flows and ensures the program is running smoothly, they help Uplight build a strong foundation of continuous and repeatable processes.

What was the impact on the team and/or customer?

The upfront and continued communication and collaboration across the teams had led to a more streamlined and controlled product process. It has also helped in understanding each team’s roles and what they need to accomplish their part of the #OneTeam goal.
